The planning commission of Teton County, a five person team that has been appointed by the county commissioners, has devised a long range plan for Jackson, Wyoming and surrounding areas within county lines. This comprehensive plan has been in effect since 1994. All residential and commercial development proposals are reviewed, and taken to public hearings if need be, by this planning commission.
The vision of this long term plan includes values like environmental preservation and improvement, putting the community first, and maintaining traditions and characteristics of the American West. To preserve environmental values, the comprehensive plan envisions setting aside scenic vistas and wildlife habitat as well as maintaining and enhancing air and water quality. It also plans to encourage outdoor recreation and adventure for both residents and visitors. All towns, neighborhoods, and resorts within Teton County are essential elements of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Private development within the county should therefore coincide with values of public lands.
To put the community first the plan supports diverse social and economic populations by maintaining a variety of housing types and opportunities, to reflect the needs of resident workers. The plan intends to provide much flexibility to local companies and property owners in developing property. Commercial and expensive residential development, however, will be put second to the needs of the community, like affordable housing projects. The plan also envisions a great transportation system.
Last but not least, Teton County planning envisions encouraging the preservation of traditions of the Rocky Mountain West whether it is in architecture, agriculture, or ranching.
