Surrounded by several rugged mountain ranges, Jackson Hole, Wyoming is saturated in natural beauty no matter what the season.  With vast meadows, dense forests, ski resorts, and good proximity to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, it is no wonder that many wish to call Jackson Hole home.

The unique geology of Jackson Hole has been forming for over ten million years.  The valley floor was uplifted to the west and dropped to the east by a fault line that created the majestic Teton Mountain Range.  What makes the Tetons incredibly striking is the way the mountains rise straight out if the valley floor with the absence of foothills.  The Grand Teton, a local icon, soars 13,770 feet above sea level and can be seen from almost every aspect in town.

Native Americans were the first modern humans to inhabit the Jackson Hole area up until 200 years ago.  Archaeological evidence reveals that Native Americans used the area for vision quests, lodging, and hunting.  The first written accounts of the greater Jackson Hole area came in early 1800s as fur trappers explored the region around Yellowstone.  Eventually, homesteaders made their way to the area, yet found the climate harsh and difficult to survive in.  Jackson also attracted cattle ranching and dude ranching.  However, the creation Grand Teton National Park and other federal lands such as the National Elk Refuge, Yellowstone National Park, and National Forest lands, had the greatest influence in shaping Jackson Hole than any other historical event.

Although creating public lands brought in a different sort of tourist dollars, a huge controversy arose.  Land needed for ranching and community development were closed and Jackson began to see the decline in cattle ranching and dude ranches.  Today, Jackson Hole's Old West charm and access to the outdoors attracts thousands of visitors a year, some who choose never to leave.
