As you drive north out of town along HWY 89, excellent views of the National Elk Refuge open up on the right. Just a few miles further, you gain your first glimpses of the Teton Range, rising abruptly above the flat meadows with the absence of gradual foothills. The closest entrance to Grand Teton National Park from Jackson lies 12 miles north at the small town of Moose. In Moose you will find a chuck wagon, pizza parlor, bar, general store, gas, lodging, and rafting outfitters.
To get to Yellowstone National Park, you can either drive through Grand Teton National Park, or continue driving along HWY 89 which follows the Snake River until you reach the Moran Junction, about 30 miles north of town. From the junction you are just a short distance from Jackson Lake, Flag Ranch, and the south entrance to Yellowstone. If you do not turn left to Yellowstone at Moran Junction, you will continue on to Togwotee Pass where you'll find snowmobiling, hiking, and excellent wildlife viewing.
The Gros Ventre Mountains are actually located east of Jackson, however to easily access this lesser known range, you must drive north along HWY 89 for about 8 miles, and turn right at the Kelly Junction. From the junction, follow the paved road a few miles past the small town of Kelly, and then take a right heading to the Kelly Warm Springs and Slide Lake. Eventually, the paved road turns into dirt, signaling that spectacular and secluded hunting, fishing, and hiking abound.
